Synopsis

Shot in rough, lively Super 8, the video captures Supergrass in the early days of their rise, mixing onstage performances with backstage moments, travel footage, and casual offstage antics. Rather than dramatizing the song's story of a teenage arrest, it presents the band as energetic, unruly newcomers whose youthful chemistry is the main attraction. The loose, home-movie style matches the track's speed and irreverence, giving the clip the feel of a personal document from the band's first burst of momentum.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on Super 8, giving the footage its grainy, unstable home-movie appearance and reinforcing the band's scrappy early image.
  • The song is based on Gaz Coombes' experience of being arrested for cannabis possession as a teenager. The video deliberately avoids recreating that incident, choosing candid band footage instead.
  • A separate US version was assembled from footage of Supergrass in America, rather than simply using the original UK edit.
  • The clip appeared in the 1996 Beavis and Butt-Head episode "Sprout," extending its life beyond the band's initial Britpop campaign.
  • "Caught by the Fuzz" began as a small-label release in 1994 before Parlophone reissued it. The video therefore documents Supergrass just as local acclaim was turning into major-label attention.
