Synopsis

The video turns "Tragedy" into a playful wedding farce. Faye, Claire, and Lisa prepare to marry, while Lee and H arrive too late to accept the arrangements and attempt to disrupt the ceremonies. The action moves from the church to an improvised disco, where the entire group reunites for the song's choreography. Its deliberately exaggerated romance, colorful costumes, comic sabotage, and celebratory finale give the Bee Gees cover a distinctly theatrical late-1990s pop presentation.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at All Saints' Church in Harrow Weald, London, with the adjoining hall used for the disco scenes.
  • The production was made on a particularly tight schedule. It was shot largely in a single day and had a reported budget of around 35,000 pounds.
  • The church and the room used for the scenes involving the men were the same location, avoiding the need for a costly location change.
  • Steps' friends and family filled the church audience without payment. Claire's mother became genuinely emotional while watching Claire walk past her.
  • The familiar move in which the members place their hands beside their heads during the word "tragedy" became one of Steps' signature dance gestures.
  • Released in November 1998 as a double A-side with "Heartbeat," the single reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom and became one of the group's defining hits.
  • The video later became closely associated with the church itself, which was recognized by fans as the location of one of Steps' most memorable pop productions.
