Synopsis

In the stark black-and-white video for "Dress," PJ Harvey lies on the floor while a huge ballerina-shaped stencil gradually takes form around her through stop-motion animation. She spins in a dress as fragmented, dreamlike images create an atmosphere of awkwardness, confinement, and theatrical display. A trapeze performer appears in contrasting footage, adding a circus-like dimension to the clip. The handmade visuals mirror the song's tension between trying to look desirable and feeling uncomfortable inside an imposed image.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was shot at Fooltime, a circus school in Bristol, using a 16mm Bolex camera.

• Only 12 minutes of film could be afforded for the production. To stretch the material, sections were repeated and some footage was reversed.

• The low-budget limitations became part of the video's visual character: the stop-motion construction, stark lighting, and rough edits give it an intentionally handmade feel.

• A second promotional video was also made. Unlike the studio-based film, it used black-and-white live footage recorded in San Francisco on August 16, 1992.

• "Dress" was PJ Harvey's debut single and appeared on her first album, "Dry," making the video an early document of the stripped-down trio era that established her visual and musical identity.
