Synopsis

Paul McCartney and his band appear in a pair of interwoven settings: a misty woodland and a warmly lit studio performance. McCartney wanders through the forest, where he discovers a mysterious Celtic-style stone cross and reacts to a startled raven. The band performs among guitars and percussion while brief comic and atmospheric moments connect the scenes. The video gives the hopeful song a gently mystical, good-natured visual treatment, balancing pastoral imagery with the relaxed camaraderie of McCartney's touring group.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed over four days in late November 1992, beginning in Ashdown Forest in Sussex and continuing at Black Island Studios in North London.
  • Two edits were prepared: one known as the "stone cross edit" and another version with a longer forest sequence.
  • Janine Duvitski, known for her work in British television, appears briefly as a postwoman. Her location footage was largely absent from the finished versions, with only a very short studio-shot appearance remaining.
  • The forest scenes were filmed in bitter cold, rain, darkness, and strong wind. Smoke machines were used to create the drifting mist around McCartney.
  • The Celtic-looking stone cross was not an ancient artifact. It was a lightweight polystyrene prop placed in the forest shortly before filming.
  • A trained raven was supposed to fly up near McCartney and startle him. When the bird stopped cooperating, McCartney had to act as though he had been frightened by it.
  • The production filmed the band getting off a tour bus, but that material did not make the final edits.
  • Despite the size of the crew and the lengthy shoot, McCartney's main forest appearance lasts only about 19 seconds in one edit and 28 seconds in the other.
  • The song's video received heavy rotation on MTV Europe in March 1993.

Lyrics

I Will Always Be Hoping, Hoping.
You Will Always Be Holding, Holding
My Heart In Your Hand. I Will Understand.

I Will Understand Someday, One Day.
You Will Understand Always,
Always From Now Until Then.

When It Will Be Right, I Don't Know.
What It Will Be Like, I Don't Know.
We Live In Hope Of Deliverance From The Darkness That Surrounds Us.

Hope Of Deliverance, Hope Of Deliverance.
