Synopsis
Olivia Newton-John portrays several figures in a bleak future shaped by pollution and environmental collapse. Sick children, contaminated water and a devastated landscape suggest a world poisoned by chemicals, while survivors depend on a sealed, artificial environment for protection. Newton-John appears as both a powerful politician and a disoriented drunk, contrasting authority with helplessness. The video's unsettling imagery turns the song's warning about pesticides and pollution into a surreal science-fiction parable about the consequences of treating nature as disposable.
Factoids & Trivia
- "Silvery Rain" was written by Hank Marvin, of The Shadows, and first became known through recordings by Marvin, Welch & Farrar and Cliff Richard before Newton-John covered it for her 1981 album *Physical*.
- The song was one of the album's explicitly environmental pieces, alongside "The Promise (The Dolphin Song)." Its lyrics address the dangers of pesticides and chemical pollution.
- The video was filmed on an elaborate alien-planet set at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. Production used a large water tank for two days, but the tank initially leaked and caused delays.
- The sequence required extensive props and costume work. Newton-John reportedly had seven costume changes during the shoot.
- Newton-John plays several contrasting characters, including a power-hungry politician and a drunk. This helped turn an environmental message into a satirical, dystopian miniature rather than a straightforward performance clip.
- "Silvery Rain" was part of the *Olivia Physical* video collection, which assembled videos for the *Physical* album and was also presented in the 1982 ABC television special *Let's Get Physical*.
