Synopsis

Nirvana's "Lithium" video is a fast-cut collage of live performances rather than a conventional narrative. The band appears onstage in front of increasingly animated crowds, with footage shifting between controlled performance and unruly concert chaos. Kurt Cobain's intense delivery, Dave Grohl's pounding drumming, and Krist Novoselic's towering stage presence are emphasized through abrupt edits and contrasting camera angles. The video builds toward a particularly volatile performance climax, capturing the physicality and unpredictability of Nirvana's live shows.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Much of the video uses concert footage from Nirvana's 1991 European tour, including performances at the Reading Festival and De Doelen in Rotterdam. Additional footage came from the band's October 31, 1991 concert at Seattle's Paramount Theatre.
  • The European material was originally filmed for the documentary *1991: The Year Punk Broke*, which followed a tour featuring Nirvana, Sonic Youth and other alternative acts. The documentary was not yet widely released when the "Lithium" video appeared.
  • One sequence shows Cobain being carried on Krist Novoselic's shoulders. According to Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon initially worried that using the image in the video would reduce its impact in the documentary, but ultimately approved it.
  • Cobain's original idea was considerably different. He envisioned an animated story about a girl named Preggo, a group of eggs, a forest journey and a sleeping king. The animation was abandoned after it became clear that producing it would take several months.
  • An earlier performance video for "Lithium" had been recorded at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, in March 1990, more than a year before *Nevermind* was released. It was made during a session conceived by Cobain and later edited for local television.
  • The video includes footage of Cobain diving into the drum kit during "Endless, Nameless" at the 1991 Reading Festival. The stunt resulted in Cobain dislocating his arm.
  • Released in 1992, the finished video received heavy rotation on MTV in the United States and active rotation on MTV Europe, helping keep the *Nevermind* singles in circulation well after the album's breakthrough.
