Synopsis

My Bloody Valentine perform "Soon" in a hazy, constantly shifting visual space. The band members appear and disappear through layers of motion blur, color fringing, blown-out highlights, and ghostly trails, while close-ups of the performers dissolve into abstract shapes. Rather than following a narrative, the video translates the song's combination of danceable rhythm and heavily distorted guitars into a deliberately unstable image. Its soft focus and smeared movement create the impression of watching the band through a vibrating, dreamlike atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was made in 1990 and runs for approximately four minutes. It uses a 4:3 color image associated with the pre-digital music-video era.
  • The band was filmed against a blue background, which was then processed through analog video equipment. Instead of simply replacing the blue screen, the production used chroma-keying, motion blur, layered images, and repeated transfers to create the video's distinctive blue halos and decaying trails.
  • The footage was shot on 16 mm film before being transferred to Beta SP tape. The resulting grain and analog image degradation became an important part of the finished look rather than a flaw to be corrected.
  • The visual approach developed from experiments made for Primal Scream's "Loaded" video. The same techniques were subsequently adapted for other My Bloody Valentine videos, including "To Here Knows When" and "Swallow."
  • "Soon" first appeared on the 1990 *Glider* EP before being included on the 1991 album *Loveless*. Its video helped establish a strong visual counterpart to the band's blurred, texture-focused sound.
  • An officially restored version was released online in 2021, preserving the video's original analog artifacts while improving its presentation for modern viewing.
