Biography

My Bloody Valentine are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Kevin Shields, drummer Colm O Ciosoiog, bassist Mark Loughlin and vocalist David Conway. The group began with a post-punk orientation, but its sound changed considerably during its early years. After moving to London, the band recruited bassist Debbie Googe and released a series of independent recordings, including the EPs Geek! (1985) and The New Record by My Bloody Valentine (1986). These releases introduced a sharper pop sensibility and a growing interest in dense guitar textures.

Conway left in 1987 and was replaced by Bilinda Butcher, who joined as a vocalist and guitarist. The new lineup recorded the Strawberry Wine single and the Ecstasy mini-album, attracting the attention of Creation Records founder Alan McGee. The band's association with Creation produced its defining early work, beginning with the You Made Me Realise EP in 1988. The title track became particularly important to the group's identity, combining a melodic song structure with an extended, highly abrasive noise section that would become a feature of their live performances.

My Bloody Valentine's first full-length album, Isn't Anything, appeared in 1988. The record balanced hazy vocals and romantic melodies with distorted, heavily layered guitars, establishing many of the characteristics later associated with shoegaze. Rather than presenting the guitar as a conventional rock instrument, Shields used effects, unusual tunings and studio manipulation to create a blurred, physical sound. Songs such as "When You Sleep" and "Feed Me with Your Kiss" showed that the band's experimentation could coexist with memorable hooks.

The group's reputation grew further with the Glider and Tremolo EPs, but the recording of its second album became prolonged and technically demanding. Loveless, released in 1991, was the result. Shields handled much of the production and pursued an unusually exacting approach to recording, while the band developed a sound built from tremolo-picked guitars, layered distortion, subdued vocals and shifting rhythmic patterns. Tracks including "Only Shallow", "When You Sleep", "Sometimes" and "Soon" helped make the album a landmark of alternative music. Its influence extended well beyond shoegaze, affecting later noise-pop, dream-pop, indie rock and experimental guitar music.

Creation Records dropped My Bloody Valentine after the expense and delays surrounding Loveless. The band signed with Island Records in 1992 and worked on new material, but no conventional third album emerged during the following years. Googe and O Ciosoiog eventually left, and the group became inactive by the late 1990s. Shields and Butcher pursued other projects, while the band's small but highly influential catalog continued to gain stature.

My Bloody Valentine reunited in 2007 and returned to the stage the following year. Remastered editions of Isn't Anything and Loveless, along with the compilation EP's 1988-1991, appeared in 2012. In February 2013, the band released m b v, its first studio album in more than two decades. The record retained the group's characteristic guitar density while incorporating more spacious arrangements, electronic elements and a greater emphasis on atmosphere. It was widely praised as a convincing continuation rather than a simple revival.

After another period away from the stage, My Bloody Valentine announced a Dublin concert for November 22, 2025, followed by British dates. The core lineup of Shields, Butcher, Googe and O Ciosoiog remains associated with the band's enduring identity. Their importance rests not on a large discography, but on the lasting effect of a few carefully constructed records that changed how guitar music could sound.
