Synopsis

The video blends live-action footage with animation inspired by "South Park." Master P opens with a mock investigation into Kenny's death before the story follows Kenny as he travels by bus toward Las Vegas, hoping to find a mother for his father. The cartoon narrative is interrupted by scenes of Master P and Chef rapping from a convertible. Their ride eventually collides with Kenny, turning the song's grim subject into a deliberately absurd visual punchline.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Kenny's Dead" appeared on the 1998 soundtrack album "Chef Aid: The South Park Album," where it was credited to Master P.
  • The song reworks Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead," replacing Mayfield's title character with Kenny and adapting the song's fatalistic soul framework for the "South Park" universe.
  • Master P, Curtis Mayfield, KLC, and O'Dell are associated with the song's writing and production credits. Rick Rubin handled the mix.
  • The video uses the same contrast as the song: street-oriented rap imagery and serious commentary are placed alongside the deliberately crude, cartoon world of "South Park."
  • Kenny is voiced by Matt Stone in the video, while Master P appears as himself and also contributes a vocal performance.
  • The track was released in November 1998, during the peak of "South Park's" first wave of pop-culture visibility.
  • "Kenny's Dead" received an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Rap Video, although it did not win.

Lyrics

This is Master P
I’m down here in South Park
I just put a million dollar reward up
For any information or anybody who know who killed Kenny
Ya heard

(Kenny’s dead)
We got to ride tonight
My little homey Kenny died tonight (That’s what I said), uhh

Kenny started messin’ up, hangin’ with the thugs
Cutting class in the fast section, see weed and drugs
And I guess that’s how it is when the ghetto got you trapped
