Synopsis
Filmed in black and white, the video follows Mariah Carey through New York City as she observes people isolated by sadness and loneliness. A young girl, an elderly man and others appear lost in their own worlds, often looking skyward as if searching for comfort. Carey later joins a large gospel choir in an imposing interior, turning the song's message of friendship into something communal and almost spiritual. The contrast between the solitary street scenes and the choir emphasizes the promise that nobody has to face difficult moments alone.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in New York during the early summer of 1994 and uses black-and-white photography throughout.
- It marked the first time Carey appeared in a music video with straightened hair. Until then, her public image had largely been associated with long, auburn curls.
- The church choir and repeated upward gazes give the video a strong religious undertone, matching the song's gospel-influenced arrangement.
- A different version was shot earlier with Carey in a floor-length gown, her signature curls and a medieval-looking setting. That production was abandoned and remained unreleased, although behind-the-scenes footage surfaced through Entertainment Tonight in 2020.
- The C+C remix received a separate black-and-white video assembled from casual behind-the-scenes footage recorded on Super 8 during the main shoot. It includes Carey and members of her crew joking around, as well as a cameo by Tommy Mottola.
- The remix video was later included on the 1995 home-video release *Fantasy: Mariah Carey at Madison Square Garden*.
