Synopsis

The video presents the Manic Street Preachers in a stark, mostly black-and-white performance setting. James Dean Bradfield, Richey Edwards, and Nicky Wire appear in deliberately provocative, androgynous poses, including scenes that create the impression of nudity and intimate physical contact. Bradfield performs with an archery target painted on his chest, while Sean Moore remains behind the drum kit. A quotation from Albert Camus introduces the clip, and Wire later spray-paints "REPEAT" onto a glass screen, linking the imagery to the single's B-side.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The clip was shot on 16mm film and combines black-and-white images with limited color. Its listed running time is 3 minutes and 19 seconds.
  • Its homoerotic and androgynous imagery became one of the video's defining features, reflecting the band's early interest in theatricality, gender presentation, and provocation.
  • The opening literary quotation comes from Albert Camus' novel "The Fall." The use of literary quotations became a recurring feature in several later Manic Street Preachers videos.
  • Nicky Wire's spray-painted "REPEAT" is a direct visual reference to "Repeat (UK)," which appeared as the B-side of the single.
  • The video was nominated for Best UK Promo at the 1992 Music Video Awards.
  • "Love's Sweet Exile" was released in October 1991 and reached No. 26 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the band's highest-charting single at that point.

Lyrics

between the billboard masturbation across highways of metallic isolation
there lies the deafening screaming of the millions wiping out the diseased pages
of apathy that bleed our innocence...

Love's sweet exile
Love's sweet exile

We blur into images of state coercion
Classified machines die misunderstood
City reflections pour out misery
We don't count cos we hate

Raindown alienation
