Synopsis

Lush's "Hypocrite" places the band in and around a brightly lit funfair, mixing performance footage with staged scenes and close-ups of the members among the rides. Miki Berenyi appears with vivid red hair in pigtails, while the group members take part in the fairground action rather than simply performing on a set. The colorful, slightly surreal presentation gives the video a playful and deliberately over-the-top character, matching the song's energetic guitar-pop turn on the 1994 album Split.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed at a funfair near Heathrow Airport. The location was chosen after an earlier, much more expensive concept involving a haunted house and a Hollywood soundstage was abandoned.

• The funfair shoot cost roughly half as much as the proposed alternative, making the real rides and attractions an unusually practical production solution.

• Miki Berenyi and bassist Phil King rode the Waltzer for the video. The operator reportedly kept the ride moving for about 15 minutes, sending both musicians close to vomiting.

• Berenyi recalled that the production included actors, a constructed set and an unusually large supporting cast. The actors even had their own bus for meals and breaks.

• The band released "Hypocrite" and "Desire Lines" on the same day, May 30, 1994. Both songs came from Split, though neither release reached the UK Top 40.

• Berenyi later singled out the video as one she particularly enjoyed because drummer Chris Acland was visibly having fun throughout the shoot.
