Synopsis
Traveling alone through deep space, Kylie Minogue enters a compact spacecraft chamber dressed in a retro-futuristic pink spacesuit. As the vessel passes through surreal cosmic landscapes, she removes her helmet, gloves, and suit in a slow, theatrical striptease performed in apparent zero gravity. Curious spacemen observe her through nearby windows, but Kylie uses smoke and a red blanket to keep control of the spectacle. She eventually settles into bed, turns out the light, and continues her lonely journey through space.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video is a playful homage to the opening sequence of the 1968 science-fiction film "Barbarella," starring Jane Fonda. Minogue was a major fan of the movie and wanted to recreate its campy, sensual space-age style.
- The weightless undressing scenes were created with harnesses, wires, and other rigging rather than actual zero-gravity filming.
- Minogue later described the shoot in her 2002 book "Kylie: La La La" as one of her most painful productions. Filming took place over two days, with each day lasting around 19 hours, and she recalled being attached to uncomfortable contraptions and crying during parts of the process.
- The clip marked Minogue's first music video to feature full nudity. It became an important step in the more adult, experimental image she developed during the 1994 "Kylie Minogue" era.
- "Put Yourself in My Place" was the second single from Minogue's 1994 self-titled album and reached the top 20 in both the United Kingdom and Australia.
- The video won Best Video at the 1995 ARIA Music Awards, helping cement it as one of the standout visuals from Minogue's early artistic reinvention.
- Minogue has continued to mention the "Barbarella" video among her personal favorites, even while joking that she would rather not repeat a production involving harnesses and water.
