Synopsis

In a stylized 1930s adventure, Kate Bush plays a reserved woman visiting a museum when a mysterious fugitive suddenly handcuffs himself to her wrist. Pursued by police, the unlikely pair flee through the night and seek refuge in a crowded pub. As they dance among the guests, fear gradually gives way to fascination and joy. When the authorities catch up, the man is taken away, but the woman reverses the situation, handcuffing herself to him and choosing to continue the escape together.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video draws heavily on Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 thriller "The 39 Steps," particularly its idea of two strangers being handcuffed together while fleeing the authorities.
  • A Hitchcock lookalike appears near the beginning, echoing the director's familiar cameo appearances in his own films.
  • Unlike many contemporary promotional clips, the video does not rely on conventional lip-sync performance. Bush plays the central character in a compact, dialogue-free narrative.
  • The central man is played by Gow Hunter, with Kate Bush and Hunter forming the video's romantic fugitive pairing.
  • The clip was released to promote the third single from the "Hounds of Love" album. The single appeared in February 1986 and reached No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • "Hounds of Love" was later included in "The Hair of the Hound," a 1986 home-video collection bringing together videos connected with the album's singles.
  • The song opens with the phrase "It's in the trees," recreated from the atmosphere of the 1957 horror film "Night of the Demon." Although the source belongs to the audio track rather than the video's plot, it strengthens the clip's suspenseful, cinematic mood.
