Synopsis

Kate Bush dances amid a vivid landscape of piled-up fruit, moving from still, almost ritualistic gestures into increasingly ecstatic motion. A group of dancers joins her, while red shoes stomp and crush the fruit beneath them. Bush appears in a fruit-patterned dress, alternately swaying, spinning, and whipping her hair around as the imagery grows more intense. Red markings on her face add to the ceremonial atmosphere, and the performance ends with Bush and the dancers collapsing in joyful exhaustion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song was inspired in part by Madagascan music that Kate Bush heard through her brother Paddy. Madagascan musician Justin Vali contributed valiha and kabosy to the recording, helping shape its bright, percussive character.
  • The fruit-filled imagery complements the song's sensual fruit metaphors and the colorful visual identity of *The Red Shoes* album era.
  • The video is closely connected to Bush's 1993 musical short film *The Line, the Cross and the Curve*. The film includes an "Eat the Music" sequence in which the characters encounter dancers performing on a carpet of fruit.
  • Stewart Arnold, one of Bush's longtime dance collaborators, was involved with the dancers associated with the video. He had previously worked with Bush on stage and in other dance-based projects.
  • In the United States, "Eat the Music" was selected as the lead single from *The Red Shoes*. In the United Kingdom, planned physical releases were recalled, making the song less widely available there as a conventional single.

Lyrics

Split me open
With devotion
You put your hands in
And rip my heart out
Eat the music

Does he conceal
What he really feels?
He's a woman at heart
And I love him for that
Let's split him open

Like a pomegranate
Insides out
