Synopsis

John Lennon's "I'm Losing You" video presents the harder-edged Cheap Trick version of the song as a playful studio performance. Rick Nielsen, Bun E. Carlos, and Tony Levin perform against a stark white backdrop while animated Lennon drawings and archival images are added around them. The musicians ride a bicycle, hold oversized balloons, and throw green paint against a wall, giving the clip a deliberately surreal, handmade feel. Rather than building a conventional narrative, the video turns the tense breakup song into a lively collision of live action, animation, and pop-art humor.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was created in 1998 to accompany the previously unreleased Cheap Trick-backed recording included on the box set "John Lennon Anthology."

• Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick had actually played on Lennon's recording sessions in August 1980. Tony Levin also appears in the alternate version and in the video.

• The Cheap Trick performance was not the version selected for "Double Fantasy." The album used a different backing track with session musicians, while the rougher Cheap Trick arrangement was released years later.

• The video shoot took place in Los Angeles on November 2, 1998, approximately 18 years after the musicians had recorded the track with Lennon.

• Tony Levin recalled that the performers were filmed in front of a white screen so Lennon's films and drawings could be added later.

• Among the unused or unexplained-looking material filmed for the clip was a sequence in which the musicians threw buckets of green paint against a wall.

• The animated Lennon imagery connects the video to other posthumous Lennon promotional clips that used drawings and archival material instead of a conventional performance by the artist.
