Synopsis

Jay-Z is questioned by a police investigator played by Michael Rapaport, who suspects him of being the mysterious figure behind the city's criminal underworld. As the interrogation unfolds, Jay-Z offers a calm, evasive account while the video shifts between the station and stylized performance scenes. The presentation closely follows the structure of The Usual Suspects, building toward a visual punch line in which the suspect's apparent physical weakness proves to be part of an elaborate deception.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video is modeled on the interrogation and closing reveal from the 1995 crime film The Usual Suspects, with Jay-Z taking the equivalent of the Verbal Kint role.
  • Michael Rapaport plays the investigator and uses his actual surname in the interrogation. According to a later interview, Jay-Z repeatedly mispronounced it as "Rappaport," and Rapaport's irritated correction was kept in the finished performance.
  • Rapaport was connected to the project through Damon Dash, whom he had known since school. Rapaport later recalled that he agreed to appear because of his relationship with Dash and his early familiarity with Jay-Z.
  • The production was notably ambitious for an early Jay-Z video, incorporating helicopter footage and a more elaborate narrative setup than a straightforward performance clip.
  • The song's opening verse was shaped by the death of The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z's fellow Brooklyn rapper and collaborator. That memorial context gives the video's power-and-legacy theme a darker background.
  • The track combines Jay-Z's rap with Blackstreet's R&B chorus, which interpolates Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City." The polished crossover sound contrasts with the video's deliberately grimy crime-film framing.

Lyrics

(feat. Blackstreet)

[Jay-Z]
Uh-uhh-uh, ge-ge-geyeah

[Chorus: Blackstreet]

You belong to the city (Uh-uhh-uh, what what)
You belong to the night (Uh-uhh-uh, ge-ge-geyeah)
In the river of darkness
He's a man of the night

[Verse One: Jay-Z]
