Synopsis

Set inside a futuristic Asian nightclub, the video presents Janet Jackson as both performer and observer in a world of sensuality, surveillance and fantasy. Patrons interact in private rooms while cameras and monitors turn their intimate encounters into entertainment. Jackson eventually takes over the club floor with a tightly synchronized routine, moving through sharp formations and intricate gestures before the performance builds into its famous dance break. The video blends erotic imagery, theatrical lighting and voyeuristic technology to visualize the song's themes of desire and uninhibited imagination.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video uses the complete album version of "If," including the "Be a Good Boy" interlude, although Jackson's spoken words from that section were removed.

• Tina Landon and Jackson created the main choreography, while Omar Lopez and Keith Williams contributed to the instrumental breakdown.

• An alternate "All Dance Version" removes much of the club's narrative material and concentrates on Jackson's choreography. It was frequently used for television because the original video's suggestive imagery was considered unusually provocative in 1993.

• Rehearsals and footage from the production were included on the *janet.* video release, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the demanding dance preparation.

• The video helped establish "If" as one of Jackson's signature performance pieces, particularly because of its complex choreography and extended dance sequence.
