Synopsis

The video reworks the song as a loose modern version of The Graduate. Philip Oakey takes the role of the reluctant groom, arriving at a church where a wedding is about to take place. Joanne Catherall appears in a wedding dress, while Susan Ann Sulley plays a frustrated woman whose anger spills over into destructive outbursts inside a flat. Intercut with performance footage, the story moves from ceremony to confrontation, giving the song's romantic uncertainty a deliberately theatrical and slightly comic visual treatment.

Factoids & Trivia

• The promotional video was not made when "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" was first released in July 1981. Television appearances, particularly the band's performances on Top of the Pops, were used instead.

• A full video was shot retrospectively in 1982, after the success of "Don't You Want Me," to support the song's American release.

• The opening church sequence closely recreates the famous church scene from the 1967 film The Graduate, with Philip Oakey occupying Dustin Hoffman's role.

• Most of the filming took place on a derelict South London council estate. The church scenes were filmed at St Saviour's on Warwick Avenue.

• Susan Ann Sulley's destructive scene included an unplanned accident: a thrown lamp struck the camera and a crew member. Her brief reaction was left visible in the finished video.

• The clip later appeared on The Human League Video Single, released on VHS and Betamax in August 1983 alongside "Mirror Man" and "Don't You Want Me."
