Synopsis
At the Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk, Huey Lewis tries to win back his former girlfriend, who appears determined to move on with other men. As he follows her through the amusements and recalls their happier moments, her friend watches his failed attempts with growing sympathy. When the ex rejects him one last time, Huey is left alone on the beach. The friend then approaches him, and the two walk off together. A surreal final gag shows a family finding a vacant patch of sand, only to face a shark beneath it.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in June 1984 at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California, giving it an authentic seaside amusement-park setting.
- Janet Cross played Huey Lewis' ex-girlfriend, while Sandra Wilder portrayed the sympathetic friend who joins him at the end.
- The band members appear buried in the sand with only their heads visible during the performance sections. Huey Lewis later acknowledged that allowing themselves to be covered this way was an uncomfortable part of the shoot.
- Comedian John Means appears as the Ball Toss Manager at the midway attraction.
- Cross later recalled that the shoot involved repeated stunts and several different boyfriends for her character. She also said that trying to look angry at Lewis was difficult because the attempted fights kept making her laugh.
- The closing shark-in-the-sand gag turns the video's romantic disappointment into broad comedy, a characteristic approach of the band's mid-1980s promotional clips.
