Synopsis

Genesis' members play a group of Mexican men attempting to enter the United States while facing bureaucratic obstacles and repeated rejection. Wearing ponchos and sombreros, they move through passport checks, border-related situations, and comic setbacks, with Phil Collins appearing in heavy makeup, a fake mustache, and a toupee. The video presents the song as a satirical look at immigration difficulties, but its exaggerated accents and reliance on Mexican stereotypes have since made it one of Genesis' most controversial promotional clips.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song was inspired by the band's real-life difficulties obtaining visas and reentering the United States during touring.
  • Phil Collins later described "Illegal Alien" as his favorite video from the 1983 Genesis album.
  • The clip's comedy depends heavily on caricature, including sombreros, ponchos, exaggerated accents, fake facial hair, and tequila references. These elements have led later critics to describe the video as racist or culturally insulting rather than satirical.
  • A controversial lyric concerning the narrator's sister was removed from later versions of the single. The change contributed to the song's awkward legacy.
  • "Illegal Alien" reached No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 46 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Genesis performed the song regularly during the 1983-84 Mama Tour, but it became uncommon in the band's later live repertoire.
  • The video was included on Genesis' 2004 DVD compilation The Video Show, preserving a clip that had become increasingly difficult to discuss without reference to its dated stereotypes.

Lyrics

Got out of bed, wasn't feeling too good
With my wallet and my passport, a new pair of shoes
The sun is shining so I head for the park,
With a bottle of Tequila, and a new pack of cigarettes

I got a cousin and she got a friend,
Who thought that her aunt knew a man who could help
At his apartment I knocked on the door,
He wouldn't come out until he got paid.
Now don't tell anybody what I wanna do
If they find out you know that they'll never let me through, cos

It's no fun being an illegal alien
No, it's no fun being an illegal alien
