Synopsis

A school-age boy decides that staying home and playing is preferable to attending class. As he skips out on his daily routine, Extreme perform the song with the exuberance of a young hard-rock band eager to make an impression. The video alternates between the boy's truancy and energetic performance footage, giving the song's comic rebellion a visual counterpart. Its playful school theme, youthful attitude, and straightforward concert staging place it firmly in the late-1980s MTV hard-rock tradition.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Mutha (Don't Wanna Go To School Today)" was issued as a promotional video in the United States in September 1989, supporting Extreme's self-titled debut album.
  • The video began as a self-created submission to MTV's "Basement Tapes" competition. Extreme won the competition in 1985, and the exposure helped bring the band to wider attention and increased interest from record labels.
  • The song is unusual within the debut album's credits. While most of the record was written by Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt, "Mutha" is credited to Cherone, Hal LeBeaux, and Peter Hunt.
  • The clip is among the early visual documents of Extreme's original lineup: Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Badger, and Paul Geary.
  • The video runs for approximately four minutes and was made during the campaign for the 1989 debut album, several years after the original "Basement Tapes" submission.

Lyrics

Mutha, Don't wanna go to school today
I think I'd rather go outside and play

They keep calling asking me
If I'll come in
Is that a sin
If being lazy is the only reason

It's getting late
So, Mutha don't you hesitate
To pack my lunch
And I'll be on my way to school
