Synopsis

Shot in stark black and white, the video follows a man reflecting on lost youth and a vanished romance. A young boy drums in a 1950s-style home, a teenage couple runs along the beach in the 1960s, and an unhappy adult revisits those memories from his modern office. Don Henley appears singing from the back of a pickup truck as the different periods overlap. The closing shot reveals the artificial construction of the imagery, turning nostalgia into a meditation on memory, time, and regret.

• The video moves through three distinct eras: the 1950s childhood of the drummer, the early 1960s romance, and the 1980s adult present. The changing costumes and settings reinforce the song's theme of aging and lost innocence.

• The young drummer is played by Josh Paul, who was seven years old during production. Audie England plays the girl in the beach scenes.

• Its black-and-white photography and stylized presentation give the clip a French New Wave influence, setting it apart from the more performance-driven videos common on MTV in the mid-1980s.
