Synopsis

David Bowie performs "Boys Keep Swinging" on a stark studio stage, dressed as a swaggering, sharply suited frontman. During the choruses, three glamorous female backing singers appear one by one, each with a distinctive look and exaggerated stage manner. The apparent singers eventually reveal themselves to be Bowie in drag. In the closing moments, he removes the wigs, wipes away the makeup, and exposes the artifice behind the performance while continuing to play with conventional ideas of masculinity, femininity, and rock-star identity.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed back-to-back with Bowie's appearance on *The Kenny Everett Video Show*, which helped establish the performance's deliberately theatrical, television-studio atmosphere.
  • The three female characters were conceived as sharply different types: a gum-chewing, working-class girl from the English Midlands; a glamorous figure modeled on Lauren Bacall; and an older, severe screen icon combining elements associated with Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.
  • Bowie performed all three backing-singer roles himself. Their final unmasking turns the video into a joke about image construction rather than a conventional band performance.
  • The song appeared as the lead single from Bowie's 1979 album *Lodger*. Its lyric celebrates the privileges supposedly attached to being a boy, while also introducing openly gendered and sexually ambiguous language.
  • The recording itself used a role-reversal concept: members of the backing band exchanged instruments, an approach associated with Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies cards.
  • The single reached the UK Top 10. In the United States, the song was not issued as a standard RCA single at the time, limiting its commercial exposure there.
  • The video became one of Bowie's most frequently discussed early experiments with drag, camp performance, and the instability of his public image.

Lyrics

Heaven loves ya
The clouds part for ya
Nothing stands in your way
When you're a boy

Clothes always fit ya
Life is a pop of the cherry
When you're a boy

When you're a boy
You can wear a uniform
When you're a boy
Other boys check you out
