Synopsis

Blur's "Country House" video turns the idea of escaping city life into a surreal game-show nightmare. A stressed businessman, played by Keith Allen, retreats to a country estate, while Blur appear in a cramped flat playing a board game called "Escape from the Rat Race." The game suddenly becomes reality, sending the band and the businessman through a chaotic rural world filled with animals, eccentric characters, and comic distractions. Bright colors, exaggerated performances, and rapid-fire visual jokes give the video a deliberately cartoonish, satirical tone.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video features Keith Allen as the "successful fella," with Matt Lucas appearing as a doctor. Models Jo Guest, Sara Stockbridge, and Vanessa Upton also appear.
  • The country-house scenes were filmed at Pyrton Manor in Oxfordshire, an Elizabethan mansion dating from the early 17th century.
  • The board game, "Escape from the Rat Race," provides the video's central visual joke and mirrors the song's criticism of work, money, and supposedly idyllic rural living.
  • Several sequences play with familiar British pop-culture imagery, including Benny Hill-style slapstick and a visual nod to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" video.
  • The song's target was reportedly Blur's former manager and Food Records figure Dave Balfe, who had left the music business and moved with his family to a large house in Bedfordshire.
  • Released during the 1995 Britpop chart battle, "Country House" beat Oasis' "Roll With It" to No. 1 in the United Kingdom. The video was later nominated for Best Video at the 1996 BRIT Awards.
  • The original film elements were restored in 4K in 2025, using scans of the video's 35mm negatives.
