Synopsis

The Bluetones race through the grounds and surrounding streets of the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, presented as determined long-distance runners in a stylized, slightly absurd endurance challenge. The band members push forward through industrial-looking locations while the video builds toward the runners' supposed reward. The athletic imagery gives the promo a restless, youthful energy, while its dry humor undercuts the seriousness of the race. The result is a distinctly mid-1990s British indie video that turns the band's momentum into a literal sprint.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Mark Morriss said the original concept drew on the 1962 film "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner." The plan was to portray the band as marathon runners whose finish-line refreshment would be cakes and burgers rather than water.
  • The video was filmed at the Royal Arsenal Gatehouse and in the surrounding Woolwich area of southeast London, giving the promo its distinctive mix of historic architecture and industrial open space.
  • The band later recalled that the original idea became less clear during production. Morriss also said he regretted choosing a running-based concept because the group ended up running for much of the shoot.
  • The promo was included on "Blue Movies," the Bluetones' 2007 DVD compilation of music videos. The release also featured audio commentary covering the band's promotional films.

Lyrics

Where did you go
when things went wrong for you,
when the knives came out for you?
Where did you go?
All you needed was a friend.
You just have to ask and then.......

CHORUS
======
you don't have to have the solution,
you've got to understand the problem,
and don't go hoping for a miracle.
All this will fade away
