Synopsis

At a movie theater, Mark Hoppus spots his former girlfriend enjoying a night out with her new boyfriend. Unable to accept the breakup, he tries increasingly desperate and ridiculous ways to disrupt their date, while Tom DeLonge and Scott Raynor perform between the comic scenes. The theater setting turns the song's adolescent heartbreak into broad slapstick, with Hoppus's wounded pride and social awkwardness driving the action. His attempts ultimately leave him humiliated rather than reunited with his ex.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Dammit" was blink-182's first professionally produced music video. The band had previously made the low-budget clip for "M+M's."
  • The video was filmed overnight inside the Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills, formerly known as the Music Hall Theatre.
  • The band helped develop the concept. Mark Hoppus initially suggested appearing naked throughout the clip to represent being emotionally exposed, but the idea was abandoned.
  • The production allowed the musicians to improvise. Hoppus and Tom DeLonge were particularly amused by band manager Rick DeVoe's performance as the theater concession worker, so they asked for his role to be expanded.
  • A poster for the 1994 film "Farinelli" can be seen behind the concession counter.
  • During the performance footage near the end of the bridge, Tom DeLonge visibly mouths "I love you" toward Hoppus.
  • Hoppus later auctioned the orange sweater he wears in the video to raise money for victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
  • The song is sometimes subtitled "Growing Up," a phrase that also appears in the chorus and reflects the video's mix of breakup anxiety and immature behavior.

Lyrics

It's alright
to tell me
what you think
about me
I won't try
to argue
or hold it
against you
I know that
you're leaving
you must have
your reasons
The season
