Synopsis

A family kitchen becomes a living timeline as the video moves from the late 1940s through the 1980s. Refrigerators, wallpaper, appliances, clothing, and daily routines change while the family grows older, celebrates milestones, and copes with the passage of time. Billy Joel performs amid the domestic scenes, while large photographic panels behind him burn away to reveal images connected to the song's historical references. The contrast between ordinary family life and turbulent world events gives the rapid-fire lyrics a vivid visual framework.

• The kitchen was designed to evolve across five decades, with period-specific refrigerators, lunchboxes, wall decorations, floor tiles, Jell-O molds, and other props changing from scene to scene.

• Production designer Sterling Storm described the shoot as a three-day rush and said he searched prop shops throughout Hollywood to assemble the sets.

• The burning photographs were created practically rather than digitally. Large 12-by-12-foot photo panels were enlarged and set on fire behind Joel.

• The flames were so intense that Joel could remain in position for only about 20 seconds at a time. The setup generally allowed no second take.

• Marlee Matlin appears as the teenage daughter in the family storyline. One sequence required a bra to be rigged with rubber cement so it would burn quickly on camera.
