Synopsis

Eric Stewart appears as a defendant facing trial for grand theft auto, while Graham Gouldman presides as the judge. The courtroom fills with a colorful cast of lawyers, witnesses, jurors and officials, many of them played by members of 10cc in different disguises. The proceedings unfold with the band's characteristic comic timing and visual absurdity, though the verdict is not in Stewart's favor. He is eventually convicted and sent to prison, where the song's darkly playful punchline reaches its conclusion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was made around a fictional courtroom trial, with Eric Stewart cast as the accused and Graham Gouldman as the judge. Stewart, Gouldman and drummer Paul Burgess also take on several supporting roles, including members of the jury.
  • "Good Morning Judge" was the second single from 10cc's 1977 album "Deceptive Bends." It reached No. 5 on the UK singles chart, extending the band's run of consecutive UK Top 10 singles.
  • The song was recorded after Kevin Godley and Lol Creme had left 10cc. Stewart and Gouldman retained the band name and worked with Paul Burgess, making the courtroom promo part of the group's first major post-split period.
  • Graham Gouldman later explained that the song grew from the punchline "Good morning, Judge!" and conversations with his father about prison reform and the way prisoners can become institutionalized.
  • The video was later collected on the 1988 compilation "Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley & Creme," and was subsequently repackaged on the DVD release "Greatest Hits ... And More."

Lyrics

Well, good morning Judge, how are you today
I'm in trouble, please put me away
A pretty thing took a shine to me
I couldn't stop her so I let it be
I couldn't stop her so I let it be
I couldn't stop her so I let it be
I couldn't stop her so I let it be
He didn't do it, he wasn't there
He didn't want it, he wouldn't dare
Well good morning Judge, yes I'm back again
I'm in trouble, so it's back to the pen
I found a car but I couldn't pay
I fell in love and I drove it away
I fell in love and I drove it away
