Synopsis

R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming" video unfolds as a hazy, intimate portrait of nighttime freedom. A group of young people gathers by the water, strips down, and swims beneath sparse lighting, while a solitary man moves through a motel pool in the darkness. Grainy black-and-white images, underwater shots, and fragments of landscape give the piece the feel of a half-remembered summer night. Rather than illustrating the lyrics literally, it evokes nostalgia, vulnerability, eroticism, and the fleeting nature of youth.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video grew out of Jem Cohen's earlier film "Drink Deep," which focused on rural swimming holes. R.E.M. saw the film and asked Cohen to create a video for "Nightswimming."

• Cohen deliberately wanted the piece to avoid the conventional, heavily stylized formulas of MTV. His stated aim was to present a broader range of bodies and make skinny-dipping feel open to people beyond the usual music-video demographic.

• The imagery was shot using small-gauge film formats, including Super 8 and 16mm. The resulting grain, uneven exposure, and underwater material give the video the texture of personal memories rather than a polished promotional clip.

• More than one version exists. The uncensored cut includes nudity, while broadcast and home-video editions were also released in edited form.

• Cohen later expanded the project into an approximately eight-minute "Full Moon Version" for R.E.M.'s 1995 home-video collection "Parallel." This edition adds material without the song, allowing the footage to function more like an independent short film.

• The video was included in "Parallel," the 1995 compilation covering R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People" and "Monster" eras. The release was issued in censored and uncensored versions because of the nudity in "Nightswimming."

• Cohen's underwater Super 8 footage later became part of the visual material used in R.E.M.'s touring presentation, where film was projected around the band on large translucent screens.
