Synopsis

Grant "Daddy G" Marshall walks alone through a deserted parking garage, but the isolation gradually turns threatening as members of Massive Attack and a growing crowd appear behind him. Their slow pursuit forces him out into the open, where he reaches a fence and turns to confront them. The mob suddenly mirrors his movements, creating the impression that he controls them. When he charges forward, the intimidating crowd breaks and runs, reversing the power dynamic.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed over three nights at the Metropolitan Car Park and Old Goods Yard in Paddington, London.

• The finished promo was not used when "Angel" was released as a single in July 1998 because the group felt it did not capture the song's mood. It remained unseen for more than three years before appearing on the 2001 DVD *Eleven Promos*.

• The video uses an edited version of "Angel" that is nearly a minute shorter than the album recording. This edit was made specifically for the video and was not issued elsewhere.

• Neil Davidge, who co-produced the song and worked closely with Massive Attack during the *Mezzanine* sessions, appears among the people pursuing Daddy G.

• The track itself grew from a session at London's Olympic Studios. Horace Andy's vocal was recorded over a programmed framework, which was later expanded with heavy guitars, live drums and additional instrumental performances.

• The concept for the video was not the only visual idea associated with "Angel". Years later, filmmaker Tarsem Singh said that an abandoned concept he had considered for the song eventually evolved into the idea used for Lady Gaga's 2020 video "911".
