Synopsis

Sparklehorse's "Pig" unfolds as a feverish, nightmarish collage rather than a conventional performance video. A grotesque, pale-faced figure appears in stark, murky settings, alternately running through a forest and rocking in a chair. The imagery is heavily processed and fragmented, matching the song's abrasive guitars, distorted vocals, and desperate wish for transformation. Its unsettling portrait of physical and psychological dislocation gives the track a visual language that feels closer to horror cinema than alternative-rock promotion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1998 to promote "Pig," the opening track on *Good Morning Spider*, Sparklehorse's second album.
  • "Pig" is one of the album's most aggressive songs. Its lyrics express rage at physical limitation and a longing for a different, stronger body, themes that make the video's grotesque figure more than a random horror image.
  • Mark Linkous recorded most of the album himself, but the drums for "Pig" were recorded at Church Studios in London and played by Sparklehorse drummer Scott Minor.
  • The video's rapid editing and deliberately unpleasant imagery stand out from the more fragile, pastoral side of Sparklehorse. It presents the band at their most confrontational and nightmarish.
  • The song was later covered by Toronto noise-rock band METZ, whose version appeared on a 2012 Record Store Day split and was issued digitally in 2019.
