Synopsis

Queen perform "Radio Ga-Ga" inside a stark, futuristic world inspired by Fritz Lang's silent-film classic "Metropolis." The band moves through a dystopian city of machines, workers, flying vehicles, and wartime imagery, while scenes from the 1927 film are woven into the story. The performance builds toward the now-famous sequence of extras raising their arms and clapping in unison, turning the video into a communal salute to radio and the shared power of music.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at Shepperton Studios in England in November 1983, with around 500 members of the Queen Fan Club recruited as extras.
  • The synchronized double-clap was rehearsed repeatedly during filming. It later became one of Queen's defining audience-participation gestures, especially during the band's 1985 Live Aid performance.
  • The futuristic imagery draws heavily on Fritz Lang's 1927 science-fiction film "Metropolis," including footage of its city, workers, machinery, and robot Maria.
  • Queen's connection with "Metropolis" also involved Freddie Mercury's solo recording "Love Kills," which appeared in Giorgio Moroder's revised version of the film. The arrangement helped make footage from the movie available for Queen's video.
  • The video's use of film clips, large-scale sets, and hundreds of extras made it one of Queen's most ambitious and expensive productions to that point.
  • The video includes brief footage from earlier Queen promos, creating a visual link between the band's history and its futuristic setting.
  • "Radio Ga-Ga" received a nomination for Best Art Direction at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • The handclap sequence became so closely associated with the song that audiences continued performing it at Queen concerts decades after the video's release.
