Synopsis
PJ Harvey performs inside a stark, seemingly abandoned hotel while the video cuts between her isolated presence, bleak coastal landscapes, empty buildings, and motionless guests. The setting feels suspended between reality and nightmare, with the characters watching or waiting in uneasy silence. Harvey moves through the rooms as an ominous encounter gradually takes shape. In the closing image, she stands before a man, her face reflected in his eye, turning the song's portrait of obsession into a disturbing visual revelation.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was released in September 1998 alongside "A Perfect Day Elise," the lead single from Harvey's fourth album, Is This Desire?
- The visual language is dominated by blue-gray tones, hard shadows, empty architecture, and deliberately still performers, giving the clip the atmosphere of an art-house psychological thriller.
- The hotel interiors and bleak shoreline provide a visual counterpart to the song's emotional isolation without presenting a conventional, linear storyline.
- The final eye-reflection image is the video's most distinctive effect, compressing Harvey's presence into the gaze of the man at the center of the closing scene.
- "A Perfect Day Elise" became Harvey's highest-charting single in the United Kingdom, reaching number 25 in 1998. It also reached number 33 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
