Synopsis

Dave Gahan arrives at a drive-in theater with an anonymous woman, where the movie screen soon comes alive with footage from Depeche Mode's World Violation Tour. The intimate outing turns into a large-scale concert experience as images of the band, the stage and the audience dominate the screen. The video moves between the couple, the performance film and brief surreal moments, creating a contrast between private seduction and public spectacle. Its deliberately loose narrative leaves the song's sensual invitation suspended between fantasy, memory and live performance.

Factoids & Trivia

• Two versions of the video exist. The original television version centers on Gahan and the woman at the drive-in, while the version prepared for the Strange Too home video places the entire band in the car, includes more concert imagery and extends the silent ending featuring Gahan.

• The drive-in sequence was filmed at the Motor Vu Drive-In in Erda, Utah, near Tooele. The shoot reportedly took place the day after Depeche Mode's Salt Lake City concert during the 1990 World Violation Tour.

• The video uses footage from the World Violation Tour rather than treating the performance material as a separate concert film. The drive-in screen effectively turns the band's live show into the couple's private entertainment.

• The video was released in 1990 alongside the single, which came out on September 17, 1990. The song was the fourth and final single from Violator and also opens that album.

• The Strange Too version was later included on Depeche Mode video compilations including The Videos 86-98 and Video Singles Collection.

• "World In My Eyes" was the first song played on the World Violation Tour after the instrumental introduction "Kaleid." Andy Fletcher identified it as his favorite Depeche Mode track.
