Synopsis

The Cure perform "Pictures Of You" against a stark, snow-covered Highland landscape, with Robert Smith and the band moving through drifts, rocky terrain, and a surreal arrangement of tropical props. The wintry setting mirrors the song's themes of memory, separation, and emotional isolation. Close-ups of Smith and the band are intercut with wide shots of the landscape, giving the video a dreamlike, almost otherworldly quality. Its visual contrast of bleak wilderness and eccentric details makes the performance feel both intimate and strangely theatrical.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in January 1990 near Glencoe and Ballachulish in Lochaber, Scotland, at the foot of Buachaille Etive Mor.
  • The shoot took place during an exceptionally snowy period. Robert Smith later recalled the conditions as the coldest he had ever experienced.
  • Three Super-8 cameras were used during the filming, contributing to the video's grainy, tactile appearance.
  • A behind-the-scenes excerpt from the shoot was later included on Picture Show - An Improbable Collection, The Cure's VHS compilation released in July 1991.
  • The making-of footage includes Bruno Brunning dressed as a polar bear, an absurd detail that fits the band's long-standing taste for surreal visual humor.
  • The promotional film runs for approximately 8 minutes, using a longer version of the song than the shorter edit issued on the standard single.
