Synopsis

The Cure perform "High" in a playful dream world suspended above the clouds. Robert Smith is carried through the sky on an oversized kite, while the band appear among theatrical airborne props and surreal scenery. The bright, weightless imagery mirrors the song's affectionate, lovestruck lyrics, turning its images of flying, magic and make-believe into a whimsical visual fantasy. Rather than following a conventional story, the video builds its charm through exaggerated movement, unusual scale and the contrast between Smith's familiar appearance and the deliberately absurd setting.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "High" was released in 1992 as the first single from The Cure's album *Wish*. It reached No. 8 on the UK singles chart.
  • The video's best-known image is Robert Smith suspended from or riding an enormous kite above the clouds. The visual turns the song's opening kite comparison into a literal piece of surrealist stagecraft.
  • The band members are presented in an airborne, theatrical environment rather than a conventional performance setting. The deliberately artificial look places the clip among The Cure's more whimsical early-1990s videos.
  • The video was later included on *Galore: The Videos 1987-1997*, the compilation covering the band's promotional videos from that period.
  • A March 21, 1992 edition of MTV Europe's *XPO* featured a report from the "High" video shoot, including interviews with the band and footage connected with the production.
