Synopsis

A young tap dancer in a homemade bee costume performs for an audience that responds with laughter rather than applause. Upset and isolated, she wanders through Los Angeles, repeating her routine for indifferent strangers while Blind Melon perform in a sunlit field. Her search ends when she discovers a hidden community of people dressed like bees. She runs through the gates and joins them, turning the video into a gentle story about loneliness, acceptance and finding a place where being different is celebrated.

Factoids & Trivia

• The Bee Girl's look was inspired by the photograph used on Blind Melon's self-titled debut album. The child in that picture was Georgia Graham, the younger sister of drummer Glen Graham.

• Heather DeLoach was nine years old when she played the Bee Girl. Her tap-dancing performance became the video's defining image and quickly made her one of the most recognizable child performers of the MTV era.

• The video's success helped turn "No Rain" into Blind Melon's breakthrough hit. The song became the band's highest-charting single in the United States, while the debut album eventually achieved multi-platinum status.

• DeLoach reprised the character in "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Bedrock Anthem," which humorously parodied the opening tap-dance sequence.

• She also appeared as the Bee Girl at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, extending the character's life beyond the original video.
