Synopsis

The video follows an exhausted waitress and single mother as she moves through a punishing day of work, childcare, housework, and financial pressure. She once dreamed of becoming a dancer, but survival has pushed that ambition aside. Donna Summer appears as a sympathetic observer and fellow worker, helping the woman after she collapses. In the finale, the waitress joins women from different occupations in a street celebration, transforming their daily struggle into a spirited display of solidarity, pride, and independence.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song was inspired by Donna Summer's encounter with Onetta Johnson, a tired restroom attendant at Chasen's restaurant in Los Angeles. Johnson later appeared with Summer on the back cover of the album.
  • The video became the first by a Black female artist to receive heavy rotation on MTV, an important milestone at a time when the channel was still criticized for its limited exposure of Black artists.
  • The production presents working women from several occupations, including waitresses, nurses, housekeepers, and other service workers, rather than focusing only on Summer's stardom.
  • Summer's character is deliberately less central than the woman whose story drives the video. Her role is that of an observer, helper, and eventual participant in the collective celebration.
  • Two versions of the video circulated: one using the single edit and another following the longer album version.
  • The video received nominations at the first MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Female Video, Best Choreography, and Best Cinematography in a Video.
