Synopsis

Rod Stewart plays a tenant whose fascination with a glamorous new neighbor, portrayed by Kay Lenz, turns into full-blown voyeurism. He photographs her around the apartment complex and spies on her through binoculars, unaware that she is connected to dangerous men. When her bodyguard catches him, Stewart is knocked unconscious, and the stark black-and-white story shifts into color and a surreal carousel sequence. The video closes with one of two alternate endings: the woman leaves with a gangster, or she remains with Stewart.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video's mystery setup was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 thriller "Rear Window," particularly its voyeuristic apartment-complex premise.
  • Kay Lenz plays the woman at the center of Stewart's obsession. Mike Mazurki appears as her intimidating bodyguard, while Dick Miller plays one of the gangsters.
  • Jeff Beck makes a cameo appearance, connecting the video to Stewart's long musical association with the guitarist. Beck also performs the prominent guitar part on the recording.
  • MTV circulated two versions of the video with different endings. In one, Stewart is left alone on the carousel; in the other, he and Lenz ride together after the gangster departs.
  • The clip was released in 1984 as a visual companion to "Infatuation," the lead single from Stewart's album "Camouflage."
