Synopsis

Siouxsie Sioux prowls through a surreal landscape of burning curtains, stark studio tableaux and windswept outdoor scenes as the Banshees perform "Spellbound." A black cat appears alongside her, while a grotesque masked figure stalks the band through the countryside. The video shifts between theatrical imagery, close-ups and restless performance footage, creating an atmosphere that is playful, menacing and dreamlike. Its strange visual language mirrors the song's hypnotic mood without offering a literal narrative.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Borehamwood, London.
  • "Spellbound" was among the first Banshees videos to move beyond a studio setting. The group had previously relied more heavily on constructed sets and playback performances.
  • The demon-like figure in the video was directly influenced by the Japanese horror film "Onibaba," one of Siouxsie's favorite films during the "Juju" period.
  • A sequence featuring the band at a funfair in Putney was filmed for the project but was ultimately left out of the finished video.
  • The opening combines a prowling cat with footage of Siouxsie moving on all fours, immediately establishing the video's theatrical and unsettling tone.
  • The single was released in the United Kingdom on May 22, 1981, as the first single from "Juju," and reached No. 22 on the UK singles chart.
