Synopsis

Queen perform "Back Chat" inside a dark, industrial space resembling a disused and partially flooded factory. Freddie Mercury moves energetically through the maze of pipes, poles, smoke and machinery, occasionally handling a wrench as the band plays around him. The video adds a surreal twist by presenting two Freddies facing one another. The performance alternates between stylized slow motion and stark close-ups, giving the funk-driven track a tense, mechanical atmosphere rather than the polished theatricality associated with many of Queen's earlier videos.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Back Chat" was written by bassist John Deacon and became the most overtly funk-influenced track on Queen's 1982 album, "Hot Space."
  • The video was shot in a single day, using a set designed to look like an abandoned, partly flooded factory.
  • The appearance of two Freddies is the video's central visual gimmick, turning the song's confrontational mood into a literal face-off.
  • Brian May does not use his familiar Red Special in the performance. Instead, he is seen with a blonde Fender Telecaster, apparently better suited to the damp-looking setting.
  • Roger Taylor performs an electronic drum part while appearing to play the rims of his acoustic drum kit.
  • The video received relatively little television exposure after the single reached only No. 40 in the UK. It became much easier to see after its inclusion on the 2003 DVD "Greatest Video Hits 2."
  • The official Queen video uses the 1982 studio recording rather than footage from the band's live performances.

Lyrics

(Deacon)

Back Chat Back Chat
You burn all my energy
Back Chat Back Chat
Critising all you see
Back Chat Back Chat
Analysing what I say
And you always get your way
Oh yeah see what you've done to me
Back Chat Back Chat
You're driving me insane
It's a battle to the end, knock you down you
come again
