Synopsis

Prince performs "Little Red Corvette" on a stark concert stage, backed by his band and framed by dramatic lighting. The performance alternates between close-ups, full-band shots, and Prince's increasingly energetic movements. During the guitar solo, he breaks into sharp, James Brown-inspired footwork that turns the promotional clip into a showcase for his developing stage persona. Rather than illustrating the song's sexual narrative literally, the video relies on performance, attitude, fashion, and choreography to convey its restless, seductive energy.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in late January 1983 at the Lakeland Civic Center in Florida, during the final week of rehearsals for the second leg of Prince's 1999 Tour.
  • It was Prince's second video to receive MTV exposure, following "1999." The two clips helped establish him as one of the channel's most visible Black artists before Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" became a major MTV breakthrough.
  • Prince reportedly disliked the idea of making a conventional narrative video at this stage of his career. A planned sequence featuring him and Vanity driving around in a Corvette was abandoned, leaving the finished clip centered on a stage performance.
  • The choreography during the guitar solo was an early indication of how important dance would become to Prince's live identity. The movement has often been described as James Brown-influenced.
  • The song's famous car imagery was not inspired by an actual red Corvette. Prince reportedly developed the idea after falling asleep in Lisa Coleman's pink 1964 Mercury Montclair Marauder.
  • "Little Red Corvette" became Prince's first US Top 10 single, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. Its success helped push the 1999 album and Prince's hybrid of funk, rock, pop, and electronic music into the mainstream.

Lyrics

I guess I shoulda known
By the way u parked your car sideways
That it wouldn't last

See you're the kinda person
That believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast

I guess I must be dumb
'Cuz U had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used

But it was Saturday night
I guess that makes it all right
