Synopsis

Olivia Newton-John turns a gym workout into a playful battle of wills in the "Physical" video. Wearing a bright leotard, she tries to motivate a group of overweight men, but their comic struggles initially get nowhere. After she leaves, the men continue exercising and emerge as muscular figures, prompting Newton-John to flirt with them. The joke shifts when several reveal romantic interest in one another, leaving only one man interested in her. They finish by heading off to play tennis together.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The song was originally written with a macho male rock singer such as Rod Stewart in mind before it reached Newton-John.
  • Newton-John later recalled having reservations about the song's sexual innuendo and reportedly wanted its release stopped, but it was already succeeding on the charts.
  • The video's comic treatment helped turn a potentially straightforward fitness fantasy into a satire of bodybuilding culture, sexual expectations, and changing self-image.
  • The video's same-sex romantic twist was unusually direct for a major pop production in 1981 and became one of its most discussed moments.
  • The Olivia Physical video collection won the Grammy Award for Video of the Year in 1983.
  • The clip was later featured on VH1's Pop-Up Video and was the first video aired on Beavis and Butt-Head.
