Synopsis

Set in a surreal desert landscape, the video follows Fleetwood Mac members through a series of dreamlike tableaux. Christine McVie searches through a telescope while Lindsey Buckingham paints Stevie Nicks, who later carries her portrait across the sand. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie appear as archaeologists investigating buried musical instruments. Broken mirrors, bowler hats, painted rooms, and abandoned pianos create an eccentric visual world that connects the band to the song's title and the Mirage album.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video's visual style draws heavily on the paintings of Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. Its imagery includes bowler hats, mirrored fragments, impossible interior spaces, and objects appearing in unlikely desert settings.
  • The clip was filmed in California's Mojave Desert during the summer of 1982. The production reportedly began around 5 a.m. in an attempt to avoid the worst of the heat, but the cast and crew still faced extreme temperatures.
  • The finished video rarely places band members together, and the full group is not shown in a single sequence. Accounts of the production describe strained relationships within Fleetwood Mac as one reason for the fragmented approach.
  • The shoot was reportedly difficult on a practical level as well as an interpersonal one. Stevie Nicks' platform boots sank into the sand, requiring boards to be placed underneath so she could walk across the location.
  • The clip's strange concept became one of the more memorable Fleetwood Mac videos of the early MTV era, helping give the first single from the album Mirage a strong visual identity.
