Synopsis

Depeche Mode perform in and around a Berkshire cornfield in a surreal, unsettling video that mixes open-air band shots with ritualistic imagery. Dave Gahan leads the group through the crops while the members appear alongside drums, cameras, flames, and strange mask-like objects. The pastoral setting gradually takes on an ominous quality, contrasting with the song's bright electronic pop arrangement. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video uses disconnected images and theatrical gestures to create an eerie, dreamlike atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in a cornfield in Berkshire, England.
  • It was released on September 16, 1985, the same date as the single.
  • Alan Wilder later said that taking part in the video shoot was one of his few regrets from his time with Depeche Mode.
  • Wilder had argued that "Fly on the Windscreen" would have been a stronger single. It appeared as the B-side and was later reworked for the 1986 album "Black Celebration."
  • Martin Gore subsequently described "It's Called a Heart" as one of the band's worst releases.
  • The video was included on the 1985 compilation "Some Great Videos" and the 2016 "Video Singles Collection."
