Synopsis

Gavin Rossdale arrives at an empty apartment and encounters a woman dressed in black, whose silence makes their first meeting feel charged and unknowable. After they touch through a wall, the two fall into a brief, intimate encounter, shown in fragments that move between desire and aftermath. When she leaves, Rossdale paints words about silence and communication across the room. He later follows her outside, where she reveals through sign language that she is deaf, turning their missed connection into the video's emotional twist.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Michele Hicks plays the woman opposite Gavin Rossdale. She later appeared in films including "Twin Falls Idaho" and "Mulholland Drive."
  • The video was filmed in Brooklyn, New York, during 1999 and was released in the United Kingdom on December 24, 1999.
  • The use of sign language turns the song's references to silence, talking, and communication into the video's central dramatic idea.
  • Rossdale later explained that he wrote the song for a friend who was HIV-positive. He said the friend faced intense stigma and eventually died by suicide, giving the otherwise ambiguous video a painful personal context.
  • The single reached No. 4 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 51 in the United Kingdom.

Lyrics

You in the dark
You in the pain
You on the run
Living a hell
Living your ghost
Living your end
Never seem to get in the place that I belong
Don't wanna lose the time
Lose the time to come

Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
