Synopsis

The video turns a breakup song into a visual loop. John Darnielle performs alone in a sparse apartment, while the camera watches his image playing on a television set. That image contains another television, which contains another performance, creating a recursively narrowing stack of screens. As the song moves through its account of waking up alone, ordinary domestic space becomes strangely unstable: the singer seems present in several versions at once, trapped inside his own reflection. The deliberately rough picture and visible layering make loneliness feel physical, repetitive, and impossible to step outside.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in an apartment in New York during the summer of 2006, in the middle of a heat wave. The apartment's air conditioning broke on the first day of shooting.

• The recursive screen effect was created practically rather than through digital compositing. The production recorded one layer, played it back on a television, filmed that television, and repeated the process.

• The full setup was planned as eight layers on a timeline and was assembled live over a two-day shoot.

• The deepest image became increasingly muddy after several generations of television playback. To preserve clarity, the video begins with seven layers and transitions to the eighth layer when needed.

• The song appears on The Mountain Goats' 2006 album Get Lonely, released on August 21, 2006.

• A second video was also attempted for "Wild Sage" during the same period. That unfinished project used high-contrast black-and-white stills of Darnielle and was intended as a stop-motion experiment.

• The video later served as a reference point for filmmaker Josh Sondock, who cited its meticulous yet messy construction as an inspiration for his own one-take music video.
