Synopsis

John Waite portrays a man struggling to accept the end of a relationship. Memories of happier moments contrast with scenes of emotional distance as his former partner packs her belongings and leaves. He wanders through the city, tries unsuccessfully to reach her, and retreats into isolation. When she eventually comes to his door, he is unaware of her presence, absorbed in music through his headphones. The missed connection reinforces the song's central tension: both people still feel the loss, but neither can bridge the distance between them.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Los Angeles in 1984.
  • Actress Elizabeth Reiko Kubota plays the woman at the center of Waite's memories and failed attempts to reconnect.
  • John Waite later recalled that the video's concept involved him as a reporter, which helped inspire his distinctive pale-blue pinstriped zoot suit. He bought the outfit at the Let It Rock clothing store on Melrose the night before filming.
  • Waite said the moment in which he lies on the bed wearing headphones while she knocks at the door was his own idea.
  • The video's deliberately cinematic approach helped it receive heavy MTV rotation during the song's 1984 breakthrough.
  • "Missing You" became Waite's signature solo hit, reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The video's dramatic treatment supported the song's themes of denial, separation, and unresolved heartbreak.
