Synopsis
Set inside a weathered wooden hut, the video follows Chrissie Hynde as she cares for a troubled, seemingly unconscious man. He studies a map, handles a bullet, plays with cards and attempts to repair machinery while Hynde quietly stays close, mending his clothes and trying to comfort him. As his condition worsens, she carries him to a bathtub and nurses him. By the end, he is dressed and able to leave, while Hynde remains behind, watching him go.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video gives the song a compact dramatic narrative rather than relying on conventional band-performance footage. Hynde is presented primarily as a protector and caretaker, matching the song's promise of steadfast support.
- Several objects suggest danger and uncertainty without explaining the man's circumstances outright. A bullet, a map, a coin, a deck of cards and an ace pinned to the table with a knife create an atmosphere of risk and possible escape.
- "I'll Stand by You" appeared on the Pretenders' 1994 album "Last of the Independents" and became one of the band's most successful later singles.
- Chrissie Hynde co-wrote the song with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. She later admitted that she initially felt self-conscious about deliberately writing a hit, but said Noel Gallagher's admiration for the song helped change her attitude toward it.
- The song's association with reassurance and care later made it suitable for charitable use, including an NSPCC appeal campaign that used it in advertising from 2010.
